Experience the best of Lille

Lille is the capital of French Flanders, a city of gabled brick façades, a large fine arts museum, and beer, mussels and a famous flea market.

Lille was Flemish until Louis XIV took it in 1667, and the old centre still looks it: the Grand'Place is framed by gabled brick façades, and the Vieille Bourse, a seventeenth-century courtyard of arcades, hosts book stalls and chess players. Vieux-Lille's cobbled streets are lined with Flemish houses, the town hall belfry gives a high view, and the Citadelle, a star-shaped fortress by Vauban, is ringed by parkland.

The Palais des Beaux-Arts is one of France's biggest museums, with paintings from the Flemish masters to Goya. Nearby in Roubaix, La Piscine is a museum in a former Art Deco swimming pool, and in Villeneuve-d'Ascq the LaM shows modern and outsider art. Bruges, Ghent and Ypres lie just over the Belgian border, and the First World War battlefields of Flanders spread to the west.

Moules-frites, carbonnade flamande, beef stewed with beer and gingerbread, and welsh, toast and ham under cheese melted with beer, suit the cool grey weather. Maroilles cheese has a famously strong smell, and beer rather than wine fills the glasses. On the first weekend of September the Braderie de Lille fills the streets with a giant flea market and heaps of mussel shells.
