La Paz lies on a sheltered bay on the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez, in the south of the Baja California peninsula. Its malecón, a long seafront promenade, runs past sculptures, cafés and ice-cream stalls. The cathedral stands on Plaza Constitución, the Museum of Anthropology and History covers the peninsula, and the city has a long past as a centre of pearl fishing.
Playa Balandra, a shallow turquoise bay with a mushroom-shaped rock, lies about twenty-five kilometres north. Isla Espíritu Santo, a protected island in a national marine park, has red cliffs, small beaches and, at Los Islotes, a sea lion colony. Whale sharks gather in the bay in the cooler months. Todos Santos, an arts town on the Pacific side, is about eighty kilometres away, and Los Cabos lies south.
Fish tacos, smoked marlin tacos, ceviche and chocolata clams come straight from the sea, and damiana, a local herbal liqueur, is served in the bars. Winters are mild and sunny, while summers turn very hot.
