Ko Yao Yai lies in Phang Nga Bay in southern Thailand, midway between Phuket and Krabi, and with its smaller neighbour Ko Yao Noi forms the Ko Yao district. Most of the island's people are Thai Muslims who fish and farm rubber and coconuts, and some keep small homestays. The interior is green hills of rubber trees and coconut palms, with narrow roads running to quiet beaches and villages.

The bay is dotted with limestone islands rising straight from the green water, and boats and kayaks thread through them to lagoons and caves. The famous rock known as James Bond Island lies to the north in the same bay, and Phuket lies to the west. The island's east side looks across calm water to the mainland near Krabi.

Seafood is simple and fresh: grilled fish, crab and squid, spicy southern Thai curries eaten with rice, and coconut milk in the sweets, with roti for breakfast. The dry season from about November to April is the calm time, and the wetter months from May to October bring green hills and sudden showers.
