Ko Pha Ngan lies in the Gulf of Thailand between Ko Samui and Ko Tao, in Surat Thani province. Hills covered in coconut palms and forest rise in the island's interior, around the summit of Khao Ra, and a ring of beaches and coves circles the coast. Thong Sala, the main town, has the ferry pier, a market and shops.

Haad Rin, on the south-east tip, is the home of the Full Moon Party, a beach gathering held around each full moon since the 1980s, while quieter bays such as Thong Nai Pan, Haad Salad and Bottle Beach are known for calm water and quiet. Than Sadet Falls were visited by Thai kings, who carved their initials into the rocks. Boat trips go to Ang Thong Marine National Park, an archipelago of limestone islets, and to Ko Tao for diving.

Southern Thai cooking brings fiery curries, grilled fish and squid, and coconut-rich soups, and night markets sell pancakes, noodles and fruit shakes. Yoga and meditation retreats are common in the island's hills. The Gulf coast's rain falls mostly from October to December, while the rest of the year is drier and sunnier.
