Kanchanaburi stands where the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers meet to form the Mae Klong, in the green hills of western Thailand near the border with Myanmar. During the Second World War, Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers built the Thailand-Burma Railway here for the Japanese army, and the iron bridge over the Khwae Yai, made famous by a novel and a film, is now a main landmark.
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, a museum, tell the story, and the Hellfire Pass memorial lies further up the line, where a cutting was dug through rock by hand. A train still runs along the wooden Wang Pho viaduct above the river. Erawan National Park, north-west of town, has a seven-tiered waterfall with turquoise pools, and Sai Yok Noi waterfall and the Khmer-era ruins of Mueang Singh are also close.
River rafts and floating restaurants serve Thai dishes, such as green curry, grilled river fish and fresh fruit, and the night market has noodles and grilled meat. November to February is the comfortable cool season, March to May is very hot, and the rains fall from June to October.
