Huatulco is a planned resort on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, developed from the 1980s along a series of nine bays with sheltered beaches and clear water. Behind the coast lie the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur. Santa Cruz Bay, the main one, has a marina, a small waterfront of restaurants and a pier where cruise ships dock, while Tangolunda Bay is the resort and golf area.

Huatulco National Park protects the coast's dry forest and coral reef, and boat trips visit bays such as Cacaluta, Maguey and San Agustín for snorkelling. The Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park has a Zapotec site, trails and a view of the river mouth, and the Copalita River offers rafting in the rainy months. Coffee grows in the mountains inland.

Oaxacan food reaches the coast: tlayudas, large crisp tortillas topped with beans and cheese, mole in several colours, and grilled fish and shrimp served at beach palapas. Mezcal and coffee are the local drinks. The sea is warm all year, and showers fall mostly in summer.
