Honfleur sits on the south bank of the Seine estuary, opposite Le Havre, and has been a port since the Middle Ages. The Vieux Bassin, its old harbour, is ringed by tall, narrow houses with slate-covered fronts, cafés and fishing boats, and the Pont de Normandie, a cable-stayed bridge, spans the estuary nearby. Samuel de Champlain sailed from here in 1608 to found Quebec.

The Church of Sainte-Catherine, built by shipwrights in the fifteenth century, is made of wood and has a separate bell tower. Honfleur drew artists from Eugène Boudin, born here, to Claude Monet, and the Eugène Boudin Museum holds paintings by them and their circle. The composer Erik Satie was born in Honfleur too.

Cider, calvados and pommeau come from the apple orchards of the Pays d'Auge just inland, along with cheeses such as Pont-l'Évêque. Menus favour shrimp, mussels, oysters and sole, and apple tart is the dessert. The Côte Fleurie resorts of Trouville and Deauville lie along the coast to the west, and the orchards blossom in April.
