Experience the best of Guanajuato

Guanajuato is a silver-mining city in the Mexican highlands, a World Heritage town of steep alleys, underground roads and colourful houses.

Guanajuato lies at about 2,000 metres in a narrow valley of central Mexico, and its houses in blue, yellow and rose climb the hillsides in tiers. Spanish miners founded it in the sixteenth century on the strength of rich silver veins, and its old centre, with the baroque Basílica Colegiata, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Old river tunnels now carry traffic beneath the centre, so many of its roads run underground.

The Teatro Juárez, an opera house of 1903 with columns and a Moorish interior, faces a small garden, and the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a grain store, was the scene of an early battle in the independence war of 1810. The Callejón del Beso is an alley so narrow that balconies almost touch. The Museo de las Momias displays naturally mummified bodies. A funicular rises to the Pípila monument, and the mine of La Valenciana is on the hill above.

Enchiladas mineras, tortillas filled with cheese and covered in red chilli sauce with potato and carrot, are the town's dish, and cafés fill the small squares. Students in costume lead evening singing walks through the alleys. October brings the Cervantino arts festival, and the rains fall from June to September.
