Grenoble sits at the meeting of the Isère and Drac rivers on a flat valley floor, with the Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne ranges rising on every side. Glass cable-car bubbles carry people from the quay up to the Bastille fort on the hillside above, with a view over rooftops and peaks. The city hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics.

A big university and research campus give the city a young feel, and the Musée de Grenoble has a respected collection from old masters to modern art. Stendhal was born here. The ski resort of Chamrousse and the hiking trails of the Vercors regional park are close, and the Grande Chartreuse monastery, where the liqueur Chartreuse originated, lies in the mountains to the north.

Gratin dauphinois, walnuts from the Isère valley, Saint-Marcellin cheese and ravioles from the Royans are Dauphiné specialities, and the herbal liqueur Chartreuse is the local drink. Winters bring snow to the surrounding peaks and a clear, cold light to the valley, and summer heat collects in the bowl of mountains.
