Ensenada sits on Todos Santos Bay on the Pacific coast of Baja California, south of Tijuana and the US border. Hills and sea fog frame a working fishing port with a cruise terminal and a waterfront with a giant flag. The old Riviera del Pacífico, a hotel and casino of the 1930s, is now a cultural centre.
La Bufadora, a marine geyser that shoots seawater up a rocky cleft, is on the Punta Banda peninsula, about thirty kilometres south. The Valle de Guadalupe, about twenty-five kilometres north-east, is Mexico's main wine region, with vineyards, olive groves and restaurants in the open countryside. Hussong's Cantina, founded in 1892, is a landmark bar, and the coast road leads north to Rosarito and Tijuana.
Fish tacos, battered, fried and topped with cabbage and cream, are the city's calling card, and the fish market near the harbour sells ceviche, clams, oysters and sea urchin. A local style of cooking mixes Baja seafood with Mediterranean ideas, and sea fog drifts in over the harbour in early summer.
