Experience the best of Dandong

Dandong stands on the Yalu River, in Liaoning province in the north-east of China, near the river's mouth on the Yellow Sea, with the North Korean city of Sinuiju across the water. The Broken Bridge, an old railway and road bridge damaged by bombing in the Korean War, now stops partway across the river, and beside it a newer bridge still carries traffic between the two countries.

North-east of the centre, the Hushan section of the Great Wall climbs a hill beside the river and is presented as the eastern end of the Ming-dynasty wall, with watchtowers that look across the border. A promenade follows the riverside, and boat trips run along the Yalu for a close view of the far bank.

Seafood from the Yellow Sea fills the restaurants, and the strawberries of the coastal district are sold across the north. The large ethnic Korean community adds cold noodles, kimchi and barbecue. Winters are cold, and the sea keeps the summers milder than inland.
