Experience the best of Colmar

Colmar, in Alsace, is a half-timbered wine town of flower-lined canals and pastel houses, set between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine.

Colmar's old town is a compact maze of half-timbered houses with steep gables, painted in blues, pinks and ochres, around the Church of St Martin. The Maison des Têtes, covered in carved faces, and the Pfister House are among the finest. In Petite Venise, flower-hung houses stand along the Lauch river, and flat-bottomed boats glide beneath the bridges. Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, was born in Colmar.

The Unterlinden Museum, in a former convent, houses the Isenheim Altarpiece, a medieval masterpiece painted by Matthias Grünewald. The Alsace Wine Route winds through villages just outside the town, among them Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, each with ramparts, towers and vineyards on the slopes of the Vosges.

Choucroute garnie, sauerkraut with sausages, tarte flambée, a thin crust topped with cream, onion and bacon, and Munster, a pungent washed-rind cheese, are local staples, matched with Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Crémant d'Alsace. The Vosges shelter Colmar from rain, and it is one of the driest towns in France. Christmas markets draw crowds in December.
