Braga was the Roman town of Bracara Augusta and has been a religious centre for centuries. Its cathedral, begun in the twelfth century, mixes Romanesque, Gothic and baroque styles. The old centre has pedestrian streets, squares and the Arco da Porta Nova, a baroque gateway; the Biscainhos Museum is set in an eighteenth-century palace, and the Santa Bárbara garden has neat hedges and flowerbeds.

Bom Jesus do Monte, a hillside sanctuary above the city, is reached by a baroque zigzag staircase through terraced gardens and is on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Sameiro Sanctuary has a view over the valley, and Tibães Monastery is a large Benedictine house. The Iron Age hill fort of Citânia de Briteiros lies about twenty kilometres away, Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal, is a short drive, and Peneda-Gerês National Park lies to the north.

Minho cooking is rich: bacalhau, salted cod, in many forms, papas de sarrabulho, a spiced meat stew thickened with cornmeal, and the pudim Abade de Priscos, a dense custard with bacon and port wine. Vinho verde, a young crisp wine, comes from the surrounding vineyards. Holy Week processions are famous, and the São João festival in June fills the streets.
