Bergerac stands on the Dordogne river, in the old province of Périgord. Its old quarter of half-timbered houses, cobbled squares and narrow lanes surrounds Place Pélissière, where a statue honours Cyrano de Bergerac, the swordsman-poet made famous by Edmond Rostand's play. The riverside quays once loaded wine barrels onto flat-bottomed boats bound for Bordeaux.

A museum of tobacco occupies the Maison Peyrarède, a reminder of a crop long grown in the valley, and the town's wine houses offer tastings. South of town, the Château de Monbazillac, a sixteenth-century castle among the vines, overlooks the vineyards that give the sweet wine its name. The Périgord Noir to the east, with Sarlat, the cliff-top castles of Beynac and Castelnaud and the cave paintings at Lascaux, lies within an hour or two.

Wine comes first: sweet golden Monbazillac, red Pécharmant, and the reds and whites of Bergerac itself. Périgord cooking adds foie gras, duck confit, walnuts and truffles, with cabécou goat cheese. Spring to early autumn is the season for the river and vineyards, and the grape harvest begins in September.
