Bar Harbor sits on the north-east shore of Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine, facing Frenchman Bay and a scatter of small islands. It grew as a summer retreat in the nineteenth century, when wealthy families built large seaside cottages here, and a fire in 1947 destroyed many of those houses. The Shore Path runs along the waterfront, and at low tide a sandbar leads out to Bar Island.
Acadia National Park covers much of the island, with rocky coast, forest and granite peaks. Cadillac Mountain, at 466 metres, is the highest point on the Atlantic coast of the United States. The Park Loop Road passes Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. wind through the woods, and Jordan Pond is known for its popovers. Boat trips go out to see whales, puffins and islands.
Lobster, boiled and served with melted butter, is the food of the coast, along with lobster rolls, clam chowder and wild blueberry pie. Summer is the busy season, September and October bring red and gold foliage, and winters are quiet, cold and snowy.
