Antibes began as the Greek trading post of Antipolis in the fifth century BC, and its old town still sits inside seafront ramparts above the water. The Château Grimaldi, where Picasso worked in 1946, now holds a museum of his paintings and ceramics. Port Vauban, one of the largest yacht harbours in Europe, lies below the star-shaped Fort Carré, and the covered Provençal market at Cours Masséna is the heart of the old town.
The Cap d'Antibes peninsula has rocky shores and pine woods, the Garoupe lighthouse and chapel, and the gardens of the Villa Eilenroc. Juan-les-Pins, on the western side, is a beach resort with a long-running jazz festival each July. Biot, with its glassblowers, and Vallauris, with its potteries, lie just inland, with Cannes and Nice along the coast on either side and Grasse in the hills behind.
A plate of salade niçoise, grilled sea bream or red mullet, or a bowl of fish soup with rouille and croutons is typical of the old-town restaurants, with local rosé and olive oil from the hills behind the coast. The beaches fill from June to September, while spring and autumn are quieter and mild.
