Annecy's old town sits on the Thiou canal, where stone bridges, arcades and pastel houses frame the Palais de l'Isle, a medieval building shaped like a ship's prow in the water. A castle with a museum stands on the hill above, and the Pont des Amours spans the channel between the lake and the town gardens. The lake itself, Lac d'Annecy, is fed by mountain springs and is known for its clear water.
Cycle paths and boats run around the lake to villages such as Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard, which has a castle, and paragliders launch from the Col de la Forclaz above Talloires. The Semnoz mountain rises behind the town. Geneva lies a short way to the north, and the ski and hiking villages of the Aravis range and Chamonix are within reach.
Savoyard dishes dominate: tartiflette of Reblochon cheese, potato and bacon, fondue, raclette, lake fish such as perch and féra, and Savoie white wines. Summer brings swimming and sailing on the lake and a lively old town, while winter brings snow on the surrounding peaks and a Christmas market in the old town.
