Acapulco wraps around one of the finest natural harbours on Mexico's Pacific coast, a deep bay ringed by green mountains. For more than two centuries it was the Pacific end of the Manila galleon trade, bringing silks and spices from Asia, and Fort San Diego, a pentagonal Spanish fortress above the bay, now holds a history museum. In the 1950s and 1960s it became a glamorous resort, and the zócalo, cathedral and old streets keep a mid-century feel.
At La Quebrada, divers plunge from a cliff into a narrow inlet, a spectacle that has drawn crowds for decades. Calm beaches such as Caleta and Caletilla lie below the old town, and the hotel strip runs along the bay from Playa Condesa. Pie de la Cuesta, to the north-west, is a long beach between the sea and a lagoon known for sunsets, and Puerto Marqués, to the south-east, is a sheltered cove.
Seafood defines the table: ceviche, grilled whole fish and shrimp in garlic, with beachfront palapas serving cold coconuts and micheladas. The green pozole of Guerrero, a hominy stew, is the traditional Thursday meal. The weather is warm all year, with a rainy season from June to October.
