Sheer granite walls rise on either side of the Merced River: El Capitan, a favourite of rock climbers, and Half Dome, a rounded summit, tower above the valley floor. Yosemite Falls drops in several stages for a total of about 740 metres, among the tallest waterfalls in North America.
