Yosemite National Park covers a wide stretch of the Sierra Nevada in California, with Yosemite Valley, carved by glaciers, at its heart. Sheer granite walls rise on either side of the Merced River: El Capitan, a favourite of rock climbers, and Half Dome, a rounded summit, tower above the valley floor. Yosemite Falls drops in several stages for a total of about 740 metres, among the tallest waterfalls in North America.
Glacier Point and Tunnel View give the classic views over the valley. South of the valley, the Mariposa Grove holds giant sequoias, among the largest trees in the world. In the high country, the Tioga Road crosses meadows and granite domes at Tuolumne, and Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir valley in the north-west of the park, has waterfalls and quiet trails. The Mist Trail climbs beside Vernal and Nevada Falls. John Muir campaigned for the park, and Ansel Adams photographed its cliffs.
Snowmelt makes the waterfalls strongest in May and June, summer days are warm and dry, autumn is calm and golden, and snow closes the high roads in winter. Mariposa and Groveland, Gold Rush towns on the approach roads, keep their old main streets with cafés and diners.
