From the Preclassic until the Postclassic period, it was the seat of a Mayan kingdom. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. Cenote water is often very clear, as the water comes from rain water filtering slowly through the ground, and therefore contains very little suspended particulate matter.

About Cancun

Cancun pairs a long ribbon of white-sand beaches and turquoise Caribbean water with Maya ruins, cenotes and islands all within easy reach.

The Hotel Zone curves along a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon, lined with resorts and beaches such as Playa Delfines, where the sand is powder-soft and the sea glows in every shade of blue. Downtown Cancun, on the mainland, is where locals eat and shop, with taquerías and evening stalls around Parque de las Palapas.

Top-ranked sights in Cancun: Chichen Itza, Tulum Archeological Site, Isla Mujeres.
