Itinerary

  1. This fortified main gate, flanked by twin towers and a drawbridge, is your theatrical entry into the medieval world. It’s the most photographed spot in the city—and for good reason. Built in the 13th century, it’s both a defensive masterpiece and a visual icon.

  2. One of the oldest sacred sites in the cité, this church mixes Romanesque strength with Gothic elegance. The sculpted doorway, flying buttresses, and stained-glass windows are stunning—even from the outside.

    Passes by

  3. Even without entering, the castle’s outer drawbridge and double defenses are awe-inspiring. This inner fortress is where Carcassonne’s counts once ruled and where attackers once stopped short.

    Passes by

  4. Dating back to the 14th century, this stone bridge connects the medieval cité to the Bastide Saint-Louis (lower town). Its gentle curve frames views of the walled city perfectly—especially at sunset.

    Passes by

  5. The walk ends in this bustling central square in the lower town, shaded by plane trees and ringed by cafés. On market days, it’s a swirl of colors, voices, and Provençal produce.

About Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a medieval walled citadel above the River Aude in southern France, a UNESCO site of 52 towers and pointed slate roofs.

La Cité, the fortified old town, rises above the River Aude behind a double ring of walls, roughly three kilometres long, with 52 towers, its foundations dating from Roman and Visigothic times and its defences rebuilt in the Middle Ages. Much of it was restored in the nineteenth century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the pointed slate roofs. Inside, the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, with its stained glass, stand among cobbled lanes.
