Highlights
Bioluminescence is undoubtedly an experience that if you come to Holbox you cannot miss it. A spectacular phenomenon that occurs in few places in the world. Where the waters of the seashore are illuminated by hundreds of living microorganisms (plankton) that light up when they hit the waves. The light is usually so bright that even fish can be seen in the water. Organisms that, like fireflies, emit their own blue light. About Isla Holbox
Isla Holbox is a car-free sand island off the north coast of the Yucatán peninsula, with shallow turquoise water, flamingos and whale sharks in summer.
Isla Holbox lies off the northern tip of the Yucatán peninsula in Quintana Roo, separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon and reached by a short ferry crossing from the village of Chiquilá. The streets are made of sand, and golf carts and bicycles take the place of cars. Colourful murals cover the walls of the small town, and a long beach of pale sand and warm shallow water runs along the island.
