Highlights

Aigues-Mortes attracts visitors every year convinced of knowing its history: Saint Louis who died of the plague, the sea at the foot of the ramparts, the Templars locked in the Tour de Constance. None of these three statements is correct. This visit goes against the conventional tours: rather than listing dates, it dismantles preconceived notions one by one to reveal a history often more surprising than the legend. The guide is a contributor who has been in the city for more than twenty years, who has dedicated two books to it. The route takes the inner-city alleys and runs along the base of the ramparts; it does not include the climb on the battlement path or the interior of the Tour de Constance, which are visited separately. A visit that dismantles preconceived notions. A contributor guide of two books on the city. A lively and accessible tone. A small group of 12 people maximum.

About Aigues-Mortes

Aigues-Mortes is a walled town on the edge of the Camargue marshes in southern France, built by King Louis IX as a port for the Crusades.

The town's medieval walls survive almost complete, and the walk along the ramparts gives views over the rooftops and the salt marshes. Louis IX founded the port in the thirteenth century, and his crusading fleets sailed from its quays. The Tour de Constance, a stone tower within the walls, later held Protestant prisoners.
