Wilmington stands on the Cape Fear River in south-eastern North Carolina, a few kilometres from the Atlantic. Its historic district preserves streets of nineteenth-century houses shaded by live oaks, and a riverwalk runs along the waterfront past shops, cafés and docks. The Battleship North Carolina, a Second World War warship, is moored across the river as a museum.

Wrightsville Beach, east of the city, is a long barrier island of sandy beaches and surf, and Carolina Beach and Kure Beach lie to the south. Airlie Gardens is known for its azaleas and an ancient oak, and the North Carolina Aquarium stands near the Civil War earthworks of Fort Fisher. Bald Head Island, reached by ferry, has the state's oldest lighthouse, Old Baldy, built in 1817.

Shrimp and grits, she-crab soup and fried oysters are the coastal Carolina classics, with hush puppies, fried fish and sweet tea on the side. Azaleas bloom in spring, summer is hot and humid on the beach, and autumn is warm and mild.
