Syracuse is a central New York city on Onondaga Lake and the Erie Canal, a former salt capital with a university hill, a lakeside park and heavy snow.
Syracuse lies at the northern end of the Finger Lakes region, beside Onondaga Lake, where salt springs once made it the Salt City. The Erie Canal ran through the middle of town, and the old Weighlock Building now houses the Erie Canal Museum. Armory Square, a district of restored brick warehouses, is lined with restaurants, and Syracuse University stands on a hill to the south-east.
The Everson Museum of Art, a concrete building by I. M. Pei, holds American ceramics, and Onondaga Lake Park has trails and a salt museum. The Onondaga Nation, whose people helped found the Haudenosaunee confederacy, lives just south of the city. The New York State Fair is held at the fairgrounds each summer, Skaneateles Lake lies to the south-west, and Lake Ontario is a drive to the north.
Salt potatoes, small potatoes boiled in brine and served with melted butter, are the city's own dish, a legacy of the salt-field workers. Syracuse is among the snowiest large cities in the country, and the hills turn red in autumn.
