Experience the best of St Moritz

St Moritz stands at 1,822 metres above the lake of the same name in the Upper Engadin, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Its mineral springs drew visitors for centuries, and in the nineteenth century it became a winter-sports centre, hosting the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948. The Cresta Run, a natural ice track for headfirst skeleton racing, has been used since the 1880s. The Segantini Museum, in a domed building, shows the Alpine light paintings of Giovanni Segantini.

The ski areas of Corviglia and Piz Nair rise above the town, and in February racehorses run on the frozen lake, while the Engadin Skimarathon in March follows the valley floor. Silvaplana and Lake Sils, farther along the valley, are windsurfing and kitesurfing waters, and Sils Maria is where Nietzsche spent his summers. Pontresina and the Diavolezza lie toward Piz Bernina, at 4,049 metres, and the Swiss National Park begins near Zernez.

Engadin walnut cake, barley soup, air-dried beef and pizokel, a dumpling-like pasta, make up the Graubünden table, and hot chocolate warms the cafés. Winter brings snow and skiing from December, and summer brings walking and cycling in cool, bright air under the mountains.
