Experience the best of Basel

Basel is a Swiss city on the Rhine where Switzerland meets France and Germany, with a red-sandstone old town, a Gothic minster and many art museums.

Read moreShow less

Basel sits on a bend of the Rhine at the point where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. Its old town climbs the left bank to Münsterplatz, where the Gothic Minster in red sandstone holds the tomb of the scholar Erasmus. The Town Hall on the Marktplatz is red too, with a painted façade, and the Middle Bridge links the old town to Kleinbasel. Small ferries pulled across the river by the current alone run between the banks.

Basel has dozens of museums. The Kunstmuseum holds one of the oldest public art collections in the world, and the Tinguely Museum is full of the moving machines of Jean Tinguely. The Fondation Beyeler, in Riehen, shows modern art in a glass-and-stone building, and the Roman ruins of Augusta Raurica lie a short drive east. The Black Forest, the Vosges and the Jura hills all begin within an hour.

Basler Läckerli, spiced honey biscuits, and Mehlsuppe, a roasted flour soup, are the local specialities, eaten above all during Fasnacht, the carnival that begins at four in the morning on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with masked bands and lanterns. In summer people float down the Rhine, and Art Basel brings the art world to town each June.
