Experience the best of Grindelwald

Grindelwald is an Alpine village in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, below the Eiger's north face, a base for skiing and hiking in the Jungfrau region.

Grindelwald lies in a green valley beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, with the wall of the Eiger's north face rising almost directly above the village. Chalets with wooden balconies line the main street, cows with bells graze the meadows, and glaciers hang from the upper slopes. The village has been a base for climbers since the nineteenth century.

A cable car rises to First, from where a path leads to the mirror-like Bachalpsee, and another goes to Männlichen, with a panoramic ridge walk to Kleine Scheidegg. From Kleine Scheidegg the Jungfrau railway climbs through the mountain to the Jungfraujoch saddle at 3,454 metres, surrounded by snow and ice. Interlaken and the lakes of Thun and Brienz lie to the north, and the valley of Lauterbrunnen with its waterfalls lies just over the ridge.

Rösti, fried grated potato, raclette and cheese fondue are the staples of mountain restaurants, with Swiss chocolate and meringues with thick cream to finish. Winter brings snow and skiing from December to March, summer is the season for hiking, and autumn colours the larches.
