Geneva lies at the western end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône flows out toward France, with the Jura and the Alps on either side. The Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots water 140 metres into the air, marks the harbour. The Old Town climbs a hill to the Gothic Saint-Pierre Cathedral, where John Calvin preached, and the Reformation Wall in the Parc des Bastions shows its leaders in carved stone.

Geneva has hosted international organisations since the nineteenth century: the Palais des Nations, the European headquarters of the United Nations, stands in a park with peacocks, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum tells the story of the movement founded here. CERN, the particle physics laboratory, lies just north-west of the city. Mont Salève, reached by cable car, and Lausanne, Montreux and the Château de Chillon along the lake are within reach.

Fondue and raclette, melted cheese, are the classic dishes, with longeole sausage, cardoon gratin and lake perch fillets as Geneva's own, and the chocolatiers make truffles. Each December the Escalade festival marks a failed attack in 1602 with chocolate cauldrons smashed and eaten. In winter the bise, a cold north wind, blows over the lake.
