Lausanne climbs steeply from the north shore of Lake Geneva, with the old town and its Gothic cathedral on the upper hill and the lakeside district of Ouchy below. The International Olympic Committee has been based in the city since 1915, and the Olympic Museum stands on the lakefront in a park of sculpture. A small metro runs up the slope between the lake and the station.
The cathedral, started in the twelfth century, rises over the old town, and a night watchman still calls out the hours from its tower. The Collection de l'Art Brut shows work by outsider artists, and the Plateforme 10 district gathers several museums by the station. East along the shore, the Lavaux terraces, planted with vines since the Middle Ages, run towards Montreux and form a World Heritage site. Ferries cross to Evian in France.
Perch fillets fried in butter and served with chips, fondue and raclette, and papet vaudois, a dish of leeks and potatoes with sausage, are the local menu, with Chasselas, the white wine of Lavaux. Summer is the lake season, and autumn is the grape harvest.
