Experience the best of Interlaken

Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Swiss Alps, the base for the Jungfrau region's peaks, waterfalls, trains and adventure sports.

Interlaken lies on a flat strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which gave the town its name, with the Aare river running through it. A broad meadow, the Höhematte, faces the Jungfrau, a snow-covered peak often visible on clear days. The town grew in the 19th century as a resort, and grand hotels and a promenade, the Höheweg, remain from that time.

Harder Kulm, a hilltop reached by funicular, has a platform above both lakes. Rail lines climb into the mountains: to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with waterfalls dropping from high cliffs, to the car-free villages of Wengen and Mürren, to Grindelwald, and up to the Jungfraujoch, a high saddle at 3,454 metres reached by cogwheel railway. Paragliding, canyoning and rafting are popular, and boats cross both lakes.

Cheese fondue, raclette, rösti and Älplermagronen, macaroni with potatoes and cheese, are the dishes of the mountain valleys, and Swiss chocolate is sold everywhere. Brienz is known for its woodcarving. Summer is for the high trails and winter for skiing in the villages above.
