The Old Town spreads along both banks of the Limmat River, with narrow lanes, guild houses and church spires. The twin towers of the Grossmünster are the city's landmark, the Fraumünster has stained-glass windows by Chagall, and St Peter's Church has one of the largest clock faces in Europe. Lindenhof hill gives a peaceful view over the rooftops.

Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world's most exclusive shopping streets, runs from the main station to the lake. Lake Zurich invites strolls along its promenades, boat trips and swimming from traditional bathhouses in summer. The Kunsthaus holds a major art collection, the Swiss National Museum tells the country's story, and Zurich West has converted industrial spaces with bars and design shops.

Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, sliced veal in cream sauce with rösti, is the local classic, along with fondue and excellent chocolate. In April the spring festival of Sechseläuten ends with the burning of the Böögg, a snowman effigy whose exploding head is said to forecast the summer, and winter brings Christmas markets. The Uetliberg mountain, the Rhine Falls and Lucerne are easy trips.
