Siena was Florence's great rival in the Middle Ages, and its historic centre, a UNESCO site, still looks much as it did then. Il Campo, the shell-shaped square, slopes down to the Palazzo Pubblico and its slender tower, the Torre del Mangia. The cathedral, striped in white and dark green marble, has a pavement of inlaid scenes and a library of painted manuscripts.

In July and August the Palio, a bareback horse race round the Campo, is run by ten of the city's seventeen contrade, or districts, each with its own flag and fountain. The Palazzo Pubblico holds Lorenzetti's frescoes of Good and Bad Government. Chianti's wine villages lie north, the hill town of San Gimignano, with its towers, is about an hour away, and Montalcino and Pienza in the Val d'Orcia lie to the south.

Pici, thick hand-rolled pasta, comes with a garlic-tomato sauce or a wild-boar ragù, and panforte, a dense cake of nuts and candied fruit, and ricciarelli, soft almond biscuits, are the sweets Siena is known for. Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino are the wines. Autumn brings truffles and the grape harvest to the hills around.
