Seattle fills the narrow land between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Olympic Mountains to the west and Mount Rainier to the south-east on clear days. The Space Needle, built for the 1962 World's Fair, stands in Seattle Center beside the Museum of Pop Culture. Pike Place Market, open since 1907, overlooks the waterfront with fish stalls, flower sellers and crafts.
Pioneer Square has historic brick buildings and underground passages from the old street level, the Chittenden Locks let boats pass between lake and sea beside a salmon ladder, and ferries cross the sound to Bainbridge Island. Floating homes line Lake Union. Further out, Snoqualmie Falls, Mount Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park are day trips, and the San Juan Islands are known for orcas.
Fresh salmon, Dungeness crab and Puget Sound oysters feature on menus, alongside a serious coffee culture and many craft breweries. Summers from July to September are dry and sunny with long daylight hours; the rest of the year is often grey and drizzly, and winter days are short. Autumn colour is lovely.
