Scottsdale lies east of Phoenix in Arizona, among the saguaro cacti and rocky hills of the Sonoran Desert. Old Town is a district of Western-themed shops, galleries and restaurants, and the city calls itself the West's Most Western Town. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and desert school, is part of a World Heritage listing for his work.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve covers thousands of hectares of desert with trails for walking and mountain biking, and Pinnacle Peak is a popular climb. Camelback Mountain rises just west of the city, and the Desert Botanical Garden and the Musical Instrument Museum are close, in Phoenix. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is downtown, spring training baseball is played in March, and Sedona lies about two hours' drive to the north.
Southwestern and Sonoran-style Mexican cooking fills the menus, with chimichangas, tacos and prickly pear margaritas, and Arizona wines come from vineyards elsewhere in the state. Summers are fiercely hot, with monsoon storms from July to September, while winters are mild and sunny and spring brings wildflowers to the desert floor.
