Experience the best of Schönefeld

Schönefeld lies in Brandenburg, just beyond Berlin's south-eastern boundary, a mix of villages, fields and business parks. It is best known as the site of Berlin's airport, which grew from the main airport of East Germany, and most visitors pass through on their way to the capital, whose centre lies some fifteen kilometres to the north-west.

Within the city's south-eastern districts, Köpenick has a small old town and a palace on an island in the Dahme, and Treptower Park and the Müggelsee lake offer green space and boat trips. Further out, the Spreewald biosphere reserve is a maze of canals and meadows where people travel in flat-bottomed boats, and Potsdam, with Sanssouci Palace and its gardens, lies to the west.

Brandenburg's tables are known for asparagus from Beelitz, which is cut from April until late June, and for Spreewald gherkins. Potatoes with linseed oil and quark are a traditional dish of the Spreewald, and Berlin's own currywurst is never far away. The flat countryside around suits cycling in late spring and summer.
