Experience the best of Santa Fe

Santa Fe, capital of New Mexico, is a high-desert city of adobe buildings, art galleries and Native American and Spanish traditions below the mountains.

Santa Fe lies at about 2,200 metres at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and it is the highest state capital in the United States. Spanish colonists founded it around 1610, and the Palace of the Governors, an adobe building on the central plaza, dates from those early years. Portals along the plaza are where Native American artists sell jewellery and pottery. The spiral staircase of the Loretto Chapel and the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis, in Romanesque style, stand within a few streets.

Canyon Road, a lane of old adobe houses, is lined with galleries and sculpture gardens, and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum shows the painter who made northern New Mexico famous. Museum Hill has museums of folk art and Native American arts. Outside town, Bandelier National Monument preserves cliff dwellings, the sanctuary at Chimayó draws pilgrims, and the High Road leads to Taos and its pueblo. The Santa Fe Opera performs in an open-air theatre each summer.

New Mexican food comes with red or green chile, or both, in the local phrase Christmas, on enchiladas and carne adovada, with posole, sopaipillas and biscochitos, the state cookie. The climate is dry and sunny, winters are cold, and summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, but it is autumn that fills the air with the smell of roasting chile.
