San Diego is where Spanish settlers founded California's first mission and presidio in 1769, remembered today in Old Town. Balboa Park holds museums, gardens and Spanish-style buildings from the 1915 exposition, with the zoo beside it. The Gaslamp Quarter's Victorian streets, a restored waterfront, Coronado's grand seaside hotel and a retired aircraft carrier turned museum are other landmarks.
La Jolla's cove has seals and sea lions, Torrey Pines has cliff-edge trails over the ocean, and Cabrillo National Monument at Point Loma overlooks the harbour and the Pacific, a good spot to watch grey whales pass in winter. Surf beaches include Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. Julian's apple orchards, the Anza-Borrego desert and Tijuana are within reach.
San Diego claims the fish taco and the California burrito stuffed with carne asada and fries, and its craft breweries number well over a hundred. Mexican food is everywhere. The climate is mild year-round, with a morning cloud called May Gray and June Gloom in late spring, and the clearest, warmest days from September to November.
