Experience the best of Regensburg

Regensburg is a medieval city on the Danube in Bavaria, with a Roman past, a twelfth-century stone bridge and a Gothic cathedral with twin spires.

Regensburg stands where the Regen joins the Danube, at the river's most northerly point. Romans founded a legion camp here in 179 AD, and the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves tall medieval merchant towers, narrow lanes and churches from the Middle Ages. The Stone Bridge, built in the twelfth century, still crosses the river on sixteen arches.

St Peter's Cathedral, a Gothic church with twin spires, is the home of the Domspatzen boys' choir. The Old Town Hall housed the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire from the seventeenth century until 1806. The Walhalla, a Greek-style temple of fame above the Danube east of town, and the Danube gorge at Weltenburg Abbey to the south-west are both within a short drive.

Small grilled sausages with sweet mustard and sauerkraut are the local snack, eaten beside the bridge, and the menus run to Bavarian pork roast, dumplings, pretzels and wheat beer. Beer gardens along the riverbank fill up in summer, and in winter the lanes are lit for Christmas markets.
