Noosa Heads sits on a headland where the Noosa River meets the Pacific, with a sheltered main beach, the cafés of Hastings Street and Noosa National Park at its back. Walking tracks follow the coast through eucalypt forest and rocky coves, and koalas live in the trees. South along the coast, Coolum, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Caloundra offer long surf beaches and family seaside towns.
Inland, the Blackall Range rises to the cool ridges of Montville and Maleny, with waterfalls, rainforest walks, craft shops and views out to sea. The Glass House Mountains, a group of steep volcanic plugs, stand over the southern end of the region, and the Noosa Everglades, a quiet waterway of lakes and reedbeds, is explored by canoe or boat. Fraser Island, also called K'gari, lies further north.
Seafood, macadamia nuts, tropical fruit and ginger come from this coast and its hinterland, and weekend farmers' and artisan markets fill with them. A day often means a swim, a walk and a long lunch outdoors. The weather is mild most of the year, with warm, wet summers and dry, sunny winters, and humpback whales pass offshore from about June to November.
