Niagara Falls, New York, sits on the American bank of the Niagara River, which pours over three waterfalls on its way from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States, was laid out by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and holds viewpoints right at the brink of the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. An observation tower looks over the whole scene, including the horseshoe-shaped falls, most of which lie across the border in Canada.
Goat Island splits the river between the American and Horseshoe falls, with walking paths, a bridge to Luna Island and the Cave of the Winds, wooden walkways at the foot of Bridal Veil Falls. Boats go into the spray at the base of the falls. Below them, the Niagara Gorge has trails along the river to the Whirlpool, and Old Fort Niagara, a French-built fort at Youngstown on Lake Ontario, is a short drive north. Buffalo lies to the south.
Buffalo's chicken wings and beef on weck, roast beef on a salted roll, are the regional dishes, and the Niagara region makes wine, including ice wine from grapes picked frozen. Summer is warm and busy, autumn colours the gorge, and in winter the mist turns trees and railings to ice.
