Narita is best known abroad for its international airport, but the town grew around the Naritasan Shinshoji temple, founded in 940, which draws pilgrims in large numbers. A complex of halls, a three-storey pagoda and gardens climbs a wooded hill. The approach from the station, Omotesando, is a street of old wooden shops and restaurants selling eel, pickles and sweets.
Naritasan Park behind the temple has ponds, bridges and walking paths. Sawara, an old merchant town of canals and willow-lined waterways, lies a short train ride to the north-east, with the Katori Shrine close by, and the beaches of the Boso Peninsula coast are within reach. Central Tokyo is about an hour west by train.
Unagi, eel grilled over charcoal and glazed with sweet soy sauce, is Narita's famous dish, and yokan, a sweet bean jelly, is the traditional treat. The temple is among the busiest in Japan at New Year, and the Gion festival in July brings decorated floats to the streets. Plum blossom in February and autumn leaves in November colour the park.
