Experience the best of Nagasaki
Nagasaki, on Kyushu's west coast, is a hillside harbour city shaped by centuries of contact with China, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Nagasaki climbs the steep hills around a deep natural harbour, and for most of the Edo period it was Japan's only window on the outside world, through the Dutch trading post on the artificial island of Dejima and a Chinese community nearby. Reminders include Oura Church, the oldest surviving Western-style church in Japan, the hillside mansions of Glover Garden and Chinatown.
On 9 August 1945 an atomic bomb devastated the city, and the Peace Park, with its statue, and the Atomic Bomb Museum are places of remembrance. Mount Inasa has one of Japan's best-loved night views, trams rattle through the streets, and offshore Hashima, known as Battleship Island, is an abandoned coal-mining islet listed by UNESCO. Hirado and Mount Unzen are within reach.
Champon, noodles with seafood and vegetables in a rich pork broth, and sara udon, topped with crisp fried noodles, are the local dishes, while castella, a sponge cake first brought by the Portuguese, is the famous sweet. Shippoku is a banquet mixing Chinese, Japanese and European dishes. A lantern festival lights the streets in winter, and the Kunchi festival with dragon dances takes place in October.
