About Nagasaki

Nagasaki, on Kyushu's west coast, is a hillside harbour city shaped by centuries of contact with China, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Nagasaki climbs the steep hills around a deep natural harbour, and for most of the Edo period it was Japan's only window on the outside world, through the Dutch trading post on the artificial island of Dejima and a Chinese community nearby. Reminders include Oura Church, the oldest surviving Western-style church in Japan, the hillside mansions of Glover Garden and Chinatown.
