Experience the best of Manchester

Manchester stands on the Merrimack River in southern New Hampshire, where the falls at Amoskeag powered one of the largest cotton mills in the world in the nineteenth century, and its name was borrowed from the English cotton city. The long line of red-brick mill buildings along the river, about a mile in length, now holds offices, colleges and a museum, and the Millyard Museum tells the story of the mills and their workers, many of them French-Canadian immigrants.

The Currier Museum of Art holds European and American art and offers visits to the Zimmerman House, a house by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Palace Theatre is a playhouse of 1915. Lake Massabesic lies east of the city, the White Mountains rise to the north, and Boston lies to the south-east.

New England staples fill the local table, with maple syrup, cider doughnuts, craft beer and baked beans, and farm stands appear in the hills around town. Autumn colour is bright, and snow can linger into March.
