Boston was founded in 1630 and played a central part in the American Revolution, and its Freedom Trail, a red line on the pavement, links sixteen sites across the old centre, from Boston Common to Charlestown. Beacon Hill has gas lamps, cobbled streets and brick row houses, while the North End, the old Italian quarter, has the Old North Church and the Paul Revere House.
Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market make up a historic marketplace, the Public Garden has swan boats, and the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum hold large art collections. Across the Charles River, Cambridge has Harvard and MIT. Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox since 1912, is among the oldest ballparks in baseball. Salem, with its witch-trial history, Concord and Cape Cod each make a day out.
New England clam chowder, lobster rolls, Boston cream pie and baked beans are the local specialities, with oysters and fried clams from the coast. Italian pastries fill the North End. Autumn colours the parks, and winter storms known as nor'easters bring heavy snow.
