Experience the best of Mainz

Mainz is a Rhine city and the home town of Gutenberg, with a thousand-year-old red sandstone cathedral, Chagall's blue windows and Rheinhessen wine.

Mainz stands on the west bank of the Rhine where the Main river joins it, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. St Martin's Cathedral, begun around 975, rises in red sandstone above the old town's market square. Johannes Gutenberg was born here, and the Gutenberg Museum displays original Bibles from his press, which launched printing with movable type in Europe around 1450.

St Stephan's church glows with blue stained-glass windows made by Marc Chagall in the last years of his life. Mainz was a Roman legion base called Mogontiacum, and a museum of ancient seafaring shows the remains of fourth-century Roman ships found beside the river. Across the Rhine lies Wiesbaden, and downstream the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO-listed stretch of castles and vineyards, begins near Bingen and Rüdesheim.

Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine region, surrounds the city, and Riesling and Silvaner fill the glasses in wine taverns and at the Mainz wine market in late summer. Spundekäs, a creamy cheese dip eaten with pretzels, and a roll with sausage and a glass of wine are local pairings. Fastnacht, the carnival season before Lent, brings parades and satirical speeches to the streets.
