Experience the best of Madonna di Campiglio

Madonna di Campiglio lies in a wide meadow basin at about 1,500 metres in the Val Rendena, below the pale walls of the Brenta Dolomites. The name comes from a medieval hospice for travellers on the pass, and the resort took shape in the nineteenth century, when Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Emperor Franz Joseph holidayed here in 1889.

The Brenta group, part of the Dolomites World Heritage area, rises above the resort with towers and ledges that carry via ferrata routes. The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park surrounds it, with lakes such as Nambino, the Vallesinella waterfalls and a small population of brown bears. In winter a ski area links with Pinzolo and Folgarida-Marilleva, and the resort has hosted a World Cup slalom under floodlights.

Trentino mountain cooking fills the restaurants: canederli, bread dumplings in broth, polenta with mushrooms and cheese, venison, and apple strudel, along with grappa and Trentodoc sparkling wine. Snow usually covers the slopes from December into April, and in summer the same paths become walking routes.
