Puerto Limón is Costa Rica's principal Caribbean port, a cargo harbour and provincial capital where the coast curves beneath green hills and rain clouds. Many of its people descend from Jamaican and other West Indian workers who came in the nineteenth century to build the railway to San José, and their English-influenced Creole, music and cooking shape the city. Parque Vargas, a palm-shaded park, runs along the seafront.

North of the city, canals through lowland rainforest lead to Tortuguero, where green turtles nest on the beach from July to October and boats slide past caimans, herons and monkeys. To the south, Cahuita National Park has a coral reef and a forest trail along the shore, and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has surf beaches and cafés. Limón itself stages a carnival each October, with parades and calypso.

Rice and beans cooked in coconut milk, served with spiced chicken or fish, is the signature plate, along with rondón, a coconut and seafood stew, patí turnovers and sweet pan bon. Rain falls on this side of the country in every month, though February, March, September and October are noticeably drier.
